Mussels!

Mussels in White Wine and Garlic Recipe | Recipezaar

I just made this recipe tonight and it was sooooooo good! I was kind of scared to make it. I thought I would probably buy some expensive mussels and then mess it up, ultimately having wasted the money (only $8 but it would annoy me anyway!). I added a little milk and boiled the sauce down a bit and I used a regular onion instead of shallots, but I chopped them really really tiny. I also didnt want to buy a whole bunch of fresh herbs and I had a tube of basil and a bottle of dried italian seasoning. Used Sauvignon Blanc -- a cheap one -- for the wine.

Mussels are one of my favorites and since I was able to do it, I'm gonna try something else difficult -- perhaps next week.

Bad News/Good News

Well, the last couple of weeks were tough. We had to take my mom to the neurologist for a checkup because she is really starting to lose her memory and at night she was starting to see spiders in her room. She's 80, and some level of memory loss is to be expected but the spiders are really an indicator of some form of dementia.

We tried to have her evaluated 4 years ago. They put her on the newest meds and within a week, she was in the emergency room with heart palpitations because the meds were not indicated for her heart condition. She got off the meds and she was not very interested in pursuing any further treatment.

Once the spiders came into play, we felt like there was no choice but to re-evaluate and we found a great doctor in her town and he has found some medication she can take. Its a patch called Exelon. Early indications are that she is not reacting negatively, like with the old meds. I called today and asked how she was. She said, in Spanish, "Bien! Soy la candela!" This means "Good, I'm feeling like a firecracker today!" (more or less)

That just made me so happy to hear. She's not having bad reactions to the meds and we'll see whether any good effects can be seen in the future.

It started off as bad news, but hopefully this medication will be good news for her.
